“From Moses to Moses, there was no one like Moses.”
Over the past millennium, there is one name which towers above all others in the world of Torah learning. Ironically, that same name is the brightest amongst the Jewish philosophers. Stranger still is that that identical appellation belongs to the most outstanding Jewish doctor of all ages. And beyond all possibility, this same title is that of a Jewish leader who martialled political and social power to rally Jews world-wide, embattled by assertive and powerful competing religions and to establish a firm community structure.
The name belongs to the Rambam, Rabbi Moshe Ben Maimon, Maimonides.
It almost beggars belief to think that one human being, a pursued refugee, at times homeless and wandering, could accomplish all this and beyond. Any one achievement in such a list would be a humbling testament to unique talent, drive, divine grace and arduous commitment. But to hold all crowns simultaneously seems to be supernatural. Unbeknownst to most of us, he was a major political force throughout the Jewish world and his own Egyptian community at the same time as mastering astronomy and other classical disciplines.
